![]() While the Base64 class in Java provides an efficient implementation for encoding and decoding BASE64 data, there are a few considerations to keep in mind: The Base64 class provides decode() methods that accept different input types, such as String, byte, or CharSequence. Each byte of encoded data is processed once during the decoding process. Similar to encoding, the time complexity of the decoding algorithm is linear, O(n), where n is the size of the input data. The output size is approximately 25% smaller than the input size, as the text-based representation is compressed back into its original binary form. The decoding process in the Base64 class involves converting four bytes of encoded data into three bytes of binary data. The Base64 class in Java provides several overloaded encode() methods that can handle various input types, such as byte, InputStream, or ByteBuffer. Each byte of input data is processed once, resulting in a relatively efficient encoding process. In terms of time complexity, the encoding algorithm has a linear time complexity of O(n), where n is the size of the input data. This overhead is due to the encoding of binary data into a text-based format. This means that the output size is approximately 33% larger than the input size. The encoding process in the Base64 class involves converting three bytes of input data into four bytes of encoded data. Let’s examine the efficiency of this implementation. Java provides a built-in class called Base64 in the java.util package, which offers methods for encoding and decoding data using the BASE64 scheme. Efficiency of the BASE64 Algorithm in Java The four characters are converted back into their 6-bit values, and these values are concatenated to obtain the original binary data. The resulting characters form the encoded BASE64 string.ĭecoding a BASE64 string involves reversing the encoding process. These 6-bit values are used as indices into a character set that includes 64 characters: A-Z, a-z, 0-9, “+” (plus), and “/” (slash). Each group of three bytes is then divided into four 6-bit sections. The BASE64 encoding algorithm takes a sequence of binary data and breaks it into chunks of three bytes (24 bits). The resulting string is safe for transmission through email systems and other text-based communication channels. ![]() It achieves this by converting three bytes of binary data into four ASCII characters. BASE64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format. Understanding BASE64 Encoding and Decodingīefore diving into the efficiency of the algorithm, let’s quickly recap what BASE64 encoding and decoding actually mean. In this article, we will explore the efficiency of the encoding and decoding algorithm provided by the BASE64 class in Java. One widely used encoding scheme is BASE64, which converts binary data into a human-readable format using a set of 64 characters. ![]() | Miscellaneous ⚠ content generated by AI for experimental purposes only How Efficient is the Encoding/Decoding Algorithm of BASE64 Class in Java?Īs data scientists and software engineers, we often encounter situations where we need to encode or decode binary data into a format that is safe for transmission or storage. ![]() The LT Passenger Van gets niceties such as carpeting, cloth, and an adjustable steering wheel (for tilt only, not reach). There is no infotainment screen, so your backup camera's display sits in the rearview mirror, while only basic manual air-conditioning and power accessories are provided. The extended body gives you a choice of seating capacity, while the Cargo Van uses all the space that would ordinarily have gone to rear passengers to stow cargo, though you can't get as much into it as rivals with high-roof options. The materials are cheap-looking but tough, and controls are haphazardly strewn about the cabin with little regard for sound ergonomics. It's a crude box on wheels made for hauling people and stuff, with little concession to comfort or refinement. There's loads of space inside the Express, but it gives new meaning to basic transportation with vast slabs of workmanlike, hard plastics on the dashboard, vinyl on the seats, and rubber on the floor. The V6 engine is perfectly adequate, but the V8 is recommended if you are going to make use of the car's maximum payload and trailering abilities. At least you get keyless entry, cloth front seats, carpets, and the few available driver assists (cruise control, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision alert) in the LT, which we regard as necessary in a passenger vehicle. For a people mover, we wouldn't even look at the spartan LS and go straight for the LT. ![]() The Passenger Van is a little more nuanced, and while the basic choices will still revolve around whether you need to seat 12 or 15 people, there are also the trim levels to consider. ![]() The cargo vans are all about cargo capacity, payload, and towing ability, so those numbers will determine which one you go for. The Express is a rational purchase done with utilitarian ends in mind, so what you pick will solely depend on what you want to do with it. These prices are MSRP and exclude the $1,795 destination fee. The 3500 passenger models can be had with the extended wheelbase as well, adding $800 to the price of each. Due to the fitment of seating rows and rear windows in order to transport passengers, the price of the 2023 Chevrolet Express Passenger Van is significantly higher than the equivalent Cargo Van. Opting for the extended-wheelbase versions will cost an additional $1,900 on the former and $1,800 on the latter. The price of the 2023 Chevrolet Express Cargo Van 2500 WT starts at $38,100, followed by the 3500 WT at $41,200. Is this enough to earn it a second look compared to its more modern and expensive rivals? There are signs that the ancient vans will soon be winding down their careers, but for now, you can still buy a brand-new Chevrolet Express Passenger or Cargo Van at a price that represents decent value. Two naturally aspirated gas engines - a 276-horsepower six-cylinder and a 401-horsepower V8 - give it the necessary performance credentials to get the biggest load to its destination without breaking a sweat, but it does so with none of the refinement or comfort of newer and more modern vans such as the Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. Yet many Americans love them for their honest-to-goodness simplicity, ruggedness, and reliability, not to mention strong payload and towing numbers. To say that these Chevy vans - and their GMC Savana twin - are thoroughly outdated in terms of refinement, tech, and safety would be a gross understatement. 2023 Chevrolet Express passenger and cargo vans are so old that they have lived through five different US administrations since hitting the market in 1995. ![]()

The sugar maples I climbed there in the late 1950s were about 10-15 cm in diameter and perhaps 8-10 m tall. I got to know the species intimately as a pre-schooler by shinnying up some young specimens on the grounds of the Sharon Temple in Sharon, ON. I whisper a prayer for whatever is the afterlife of trees, and hum a favorite hymn, “Ein Feste Burg,” singing a sad goodbye to what was, indeed, a mighty fortress.ĭaryln Brewer Hoffstot’s book “A Farm Life: Observations From Fields and Forests” will be published by Stackpole Books in April. It would be impossible to grow up in a rural area of the Maritimes (and the southern portions of ON and QC) and not be aware of the sugar maple ( Acer saccharum Marsh.). I thank the tree for its contribution to this farm, for standing by my family in good times and bad. I say how grateful I am to have spent a third of a century under its gaze. Now when I close the chicken coop at night, I stand in the altar and give a eulogy. I feel as if I am losing a member of the family. “Standing people” is what the Cherokee called trees. “Once it colonizes the root system and displays visible mushrooms, the fungus is well progressed within the tree,” Crooks says. Individual trees and entire forests are becoming less resilient against pests and disease because of climate change.įor our old maple, the Armillaria fungus is a death knell. Sudden periods of wet and then dry increase stress on the tree and allow fungi to more easily infiltrate a tree’s root system. He tells me that while Armillaria fungus is not new, western Pennsylvania is becoming more favorable for fungal development. I don’t know how large ours is, but I do worry about it encroaching on a nearby tree, a large red oak that is a favorite of my husband’s. ![]() A patch of Armillaria was discovered in Oregon in 1998 covering 2384 acres. I learn that the Armillaria fungus is the world’s largest known organism, bigger than the 200-ton blue whale. If I remove the bark, I might see bright, white mycelial fans. Black, stringy rhizomorphs grow through the soil into the roots and trunk of the tree and attack the wood. The Armillaria fungus affects many hardwoods and conifers, especially maples, oaks, and elms. The giveaway, he says, are the small honey-colored mushrooms at the tree’s base, which indicate the maple has a fungus: Armillaria root rot. Maples are prone to many diseases, such as anthracnose, verticillium wilt, and powdery mildew, but I am still confused, so I call Brian Crooks, a forester with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. I do not know why the tree is dying, so I do some research. For the first time, I see three woodpecker holes, so beautifully aligned they look like Orion’s belt. More plants grow in the tree’s crevices: purple blackberry canes, spiky grasses and red-tinged euonymus. It faded slowly at first, but last summer it began to go fast, its lichen-covered limbs snapping and falling to the ground, the gray bark covered with dark green moss. The maple’s gnarly roots protrude out of the ground like those you’d see illustrated in “Alice in Wonderland.” We hung maple samaras, those winged seeds like helicopters, on our noses. I remember our son climbing into the hollow that formed, where ferns now grow. ![]() Sometime, long before we arrived at our western Pennsylvania farm 34 years ago, the main trunk split into four. The maple lives at the bottom of a hill where our children used to ride sleds in winter and jump into colorful leaf piles in autumn. ![]() ![]() I don’t know if it ever provided sweet sap as other maples have in this valley, but a friend who grew up here and has tapped sugar maples for fifty years says he’s never seen a bigger Acer saccharum. Young, perhaps, for maples, which can live up to 300 years. My husband and I guess the tree is about the age of our old log house, circa 1860, but we’re not sure. I can stand underneath the tree in the rain and barely get wet. Our maple, no record-holder, is smaller, about 90 feet tall with a 70-foot canopy, but still of a size one doesn’t see every day. That tree was a national champion: 19 feet in circumference, 101 feet tall with a canopy that stretched 100 feet. Not as large as the maple that was felled in New Hampshire in 2021. I measure its girth: 13.5 feet in circumference. Its tall branches tower above me like flying buttresses, its wide canopy is a sanctuary. Standing under the old sugar maple, I want to sing a hymn. ![]() These passes are available at seashore beach fee booths during operating hours or at any National Park Service area collecting entrance fees. Public intellectuals of a sort almost unknown today-which is to say, real intellectuals totally accustomed to the media glare-both men were extremely prolific authors who also ventured into the arena of politics. Yet despite the upper-crust images, they were not, as one observer notes, products of the old Eastern establishment, but conquerors of it: outsiders who found their way in. Both were products of plush upbringings and boarding schools, with patrician accents and mannerisms that scream privilege and hauteur. Speaking of the differences between then and now, it’s striking how remote from any current TV personalities they are. Still, they were fundamentally ill-matched in the initial round: While Buckley had gone sailing prior to the convention, Vidal had hired a researcher and come away with a sheaf of Buckley quotes that he used to nail him. No doubt the pressurized situation and their intense dislike of each other accounted for this initial discomfort, but the two media pros soon overcame it. ![]() When we see Buckley and Vidal in the first debate, both seem self-conscious and slightly awkward, with forced smiles and graceless stabs at jocularity. When the Republicans decided to hold their convention in Miami-their first below the Mason-Dixon line in 104 years-it was intended to distance the event from protestors. Kennedy were assassinated not long after, the former death sparking riots across the country. The Tet offensive in the winter showed the Vietnam War spiraling toward disaster. These exchanges came in the context of an America that was “being split at the seams,” as one commentator puts it. As one interviewee, the late Christopher Hitchens, understates, “They really did despise each other.” That antipathy, which evidently owed much to Vidal’s taunting pan-sexuality and Buckley’s rigid Catholic revulsion at same, didn’t erupt into history-making acrimony till the ninth of the ten debates, but it’s in plain view from the first. They had crossed paths at political events in 19 and come away with a profound mutual loathing. So the network of course enlisted Vidal, a celebrity provocateur from the left side of the dial, and persuaded Buckley to accept it. Asked by the network if there was anyone he would not debate, he said he would refuse any Communist, or Gore Vidal. Buckley, editor of the National Review and host of PBS’ “Firing Line,” was already the nation’s leading conservative media celebrity. The choice of antagonists could not have been more incendiary. Poor third-place ABC, with neither the stars nor the resources to match its competitors, needed a gimmick, and it lit upon a corker: have two ideological opposites debate the conventions as part of the network’s coverage. ![]() CBS and NBC had their star anchors ( Walter Cronkite on the former, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley on the latter) and set out to broadcast the events gavel-to-gavel. It was not an even playing field for the three networks, though. The 1968 conventions were the first to be broadcast in color, and an estimated 80 percent of Americans watched them. Like the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, the Buckley-Vidal throwdown was the product of the decade when television was truly in full effect in American life, and much was brand new. |
